I will start with with a test file (the policy) and go on from there... initial distribution will be the gamer project files. I'm wondering if I should hatch Hermes 1.7 or whether I should wait until the next release and get it strait from the author... (to hatch or not to hatch that is the question :-) I expect I will take it slow to start off with and try to get shareware/pd directly from the authors so that I don't run the risk of distributing files that sysops have already. I useed PkArc (with and without the "old compatiblity" flag) as well as onother Arcer (the name escapes me at the moment). All three were apparently inacceptable for ArcExtract, the Mac nodes had to unpack the stuff by hand. My solution was to have them all switch to ZIP (which is better anyway), however I would like to have an Arcer that is accepted by the all deArcers. Any suggestions? Dieter and I are all set to roll... the last week he's been calling here and connecting just fine. I've been working on arranging initial distribution points in the US. So far, looks like we have BMUG, BCS, NOMUG and Shockwave Rider interested. I also saw a message from Brian Hall expressing interest in MSDN and offering a link for the Australia node. With the release of MacTick we'll be able to automate the involvement of Macintosh-based systems like AMUG. I am sure there are a lot of others that will participate, we should start posting info once we've got the areanames, and all that down pat. Fiddled with everything and finally changed from MF to Finder and it runs like a clock. No bombs, no dropping out just chugs along on sys7,Hermes 1,7, Tabby 2.2. That is the most difficult part of writing it in HyperCard - using Finder it should not be that difficult, but using MultiFinder... that's going to cost a lot of people a lot of memory. With system 7 I could solve this for you by writing a small application that uses the process manager and the apple event manager to send all running processes (including the Finder if you want that!) a quit event. But then again, that still means solving it outside HyperCard, and not many sysops run System 7 on their BBS machine. Would the world be interested in an XCMD that launches the next application and then quits? Personally, I DO run HyperCard as a part of my event. MacTick is a program that helps manage file distribution through FidoNet. It is based on the TIC mechanism, which is documented in FSC-0028 and is used by most IBM based systems with a program called Tick (written by Barry Geller). Files are sent from BBS system to BBS system accompanied by a small control file. This control file contains information, such as who originally sent the file out, which file area it belongs to, what path it followed to your system, which nodes have already 'seen' this file, which node sent it to you, etc. These control files are named TKxxxxxx.TIC, where xxxxxx stands for six digits, and you can find them in your Generic folder, where Generic Import, Generic Export, and all your incoming and outgoing mail reside. Setting up MacTick is relatively simple. First, you copy the program to the folder where all your BBS programs, and the TabbyNet programs, reside. Next, you take your favourite text editor, and create a couple of text files. A sample setup has been provided with MacTick. Finally, you insert MacTick in your Tabby event chain. The Tic mechanism has some features not seen in a news echo. First there is the concept of a 'prerelease file'. This means a file is distributed to you, but is not to appear in the file area until a certain date. This is useful for spreading files around that network and have them 'appear' everywhere at the same time. Next, there is the concept of the 'secondary area'. This means that a file is not only spread to all nodes connected to a certain area, but also to all nodes connected to a second area. How you use this feature is completely up to you. It becomes particularly useful however in combination with the prerelease system. Let's say you are a beta tester for some product that is spread through fidonet. The author wants all beta testers to receive the beta versions at the same time. For this purpose he creates two file echo areas, called UTIL and PREUTIL. He makes UTIL the secondary area of PREUTIL, and spreads the file to a couple of privileged beta testers, who will in turn spread the file on the prerelease date to all beta testers. This is implemented in the same way on MS-DOS systems. While MacTick allows you to maintain file echo's and receive files sent to you from other nodes, another program provided called Hatch allows you to send out files yourself. A .TIC file is a textfile that accompanies a file that is distributed by Hatch/Tick. Hatch is a program that the originator of a file uses to initiate distribution of a file; Tick reads the .tic file and based on the information contained in it and what's in Tick's configuration file, distributes the file to others, modifies the .TIC accordinly, and moves the files to the correct DL directory. The .tic contains info like file area name, file description, who originated it, etc. It also has SEEN-BY lines much like SEEN-BYs on echomail messages, that list who has received the file already to prevent dupes. Raid is a program like Areafix. It allows a user via a netmail message to add/delete file areas much like areafix adds/deletes echomail areas. So... "Hatch" is used by the originator to initially distribute the file and create the .TIC, "Tick" reads the .TIC file and [along with it's control file] determines who gets the file and where it's stored on your disk, and "Raid" allows users to add/delete file areas remotely. If Duncan or anyone wants to know, here's my two cents worht. I don't mean to say that this is the way it should be, it's just my advice. First, and most important, the AUTHOR is the ONLY one who can distribute the files. Furthermore, he must distribute it via his local hatch site, not some other hatch site. At first it sounded a little stringent, but here's why: 1) Multiple files. If everyone gets Disinfectant, and everyone hatches it, then we'll have 5 different copies with 5 different names costing 5 times the money. 2) Viruses. This can control the spread of viruses. Before distributing, the Hatch sight should always run virus programs on it (disinfectant, etc). 3) Hacks. If a non-author distributes things, they can make hacks on programs. Like a little bit ago, the SDS release Lharc (a compression program). Some guy hacked a copy called ice, and distributed it. So, all these people were downloading it. It destroyed the SDS reputation a lot. Second, don't allow authors to distribute umpteen million upgrades. Duncan, or whoever is in charge, should set like only one copy allowed per 30 days. Otherwise, the author will keep saying "wait, I made a bug fix". It starts to get expensive, as they in effect might use the MDN as a beta-testing device. Back in the beginning of SDS and SDN, some guy released like 12 versions in one month, each one with a little bug fix. Finally, assign hatching by geographical location. Ex: in the SDS, all stuff released in Region 10 (California and Nevada) goes to the Reg 10 coordinator. This is another way to stop multiple copies. It also tends to stop viruses. Also, I remember someone saying that someone from the MDN might want to post the new files in MACFILES. There's a program called RFP (received for processing), that does just that: it takes the files and posts a message in an echo containing the name, size, description, etc. and is all automated. Distributing messages is nothing new: you had a question to ask, you typed it in, and told your BBS program to enter it in the MacSysop echo. Almost transparantly it got sent to several hundred BBS systems all over the world. Distributing messages is nothing new for you. Sometimes, you get a great upload from a user and you want the world to know about it. Up to now, you entered a message describing the file and had that message sent out - the actual file stayed on your system, and any interested sould would have to reach your system to get the file. File distribution solved that. Just like messages, they get entered in echo area's and spread to all systems that 'subscribe' to that echo. Messages get transported in compressed packages, with all the relevant information packed in with the message: from who, to who, subject, originating system, and a lot of information you regularly don't see, like $een-by lines. With files things go a little bit different. Instead of packing the relevant information into the file, it gets transported in an accompanying file, with a name like TK124356.TIC (each file with a different number, of course). The TIC file describes the file, and the program that interpret them and puts the files in the correct folders is called Tick. As to 'why' would one want to distribute a file... well, a lot of nets distribute NODEDIFFs this way, and just like you get messages relevant to one topic in one area (like MacSysop), you will get files relevant to one topic (system extension, Excel Macros, etc) in one area. Look at the amount of users that download from your BBS, and you will clearly see a demand for distributing files... MacTick is a program that does all this for sysops who have their system running on Macintosh hardware, and is announced in the next message. I had to delete it because Hermes wasnt allowing any new users on, it would just say "Sorry, you cant use that name" on whatever the user typed in. Hi Pete, Bob is running SYStem 6.0x never the less when I converted to SYS7 I had horrible problems with Tabby quitting in the middle of an event while running FRAF Fighter etc. It would drop ou to the finder after sendnews or sendmail or sometimes delivermail. I was running the Tabby mods at the set memory and had even removed the memory CDEV in the hopes of a fix without success until in desperation I said "what the Hell" and switched from MF to Finder in the Tabby setup. One unfortunate quirk is that it will not grab the file sizes if they are not in the primary receiving areas (i.e. if you move the incoming files daily, but wish to run RFP only weekly, you will show 0-byte file sizes -- if you run it daily, before moving files to user-accessible areas, the sizes are properly included).
